There was a problem with Pidgin connecting to Yahoo which occured last Friday, June 19 2009. The cause of this problem is that Yahoo has stopped support for older versions of their own Yahoo Messenger clients. This means that most of the third party clients will have problem in logging in. The solutions currently for this is either update your Pidgin Client to the latest 2.5.7 version or do some changes to the settings manually.
Here are the steps which I found to be working:
On the Pidgin Menu, select Accounts > Manage Accounts.
Select your Yahoo account then click Modify.
On the Modify Account Dialog, select Advanced tab.
Change the Pager Server entry to on of the following IPs:
cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com, 188.8.131.52, 184.108.40.206, 220.127.116.11, 18.104.22.168, 22.214.171.124, 126.96.36.199, 188.8.131.52, 184.108.40.206, 220.127.116.11, 18.104.22.168
Click Save, restart Pidgin or Disable ang Enable your Yahoo Account.
Now you can again connect to Yahoo!
Update: As of June 24, 2009 I was having problems again using these IP Addresses. They return Connection Refursed error and I can’t log in to my Yahoo Messenger Account. To fix this, use cn.scs.msg.yahoo.com on the Pager Server instead.
